Shelli Homer
12:12
Is the pronto practice site supposed to show up in the pronto conversations after we join the course?
Jim Julius (he/him)
12:45
Shelli, yes, it should be an option for you to select within the Pronto interface, either on the web or the app.
Marlesha Keys
13:04
That's really neat; I wasn't aware of the language options/support.
Shelli Homer
14:57
hmmm. there are a lot of other options, but not the pronto practice course.
Jim Julius (he/him)
15:29
I may need to push the Pronto enrollment update … forgot about that - hold on a moment
Shelli Homer
17:42
There it is!
Jim Julius (he/him)
17:46
Ok, I’ve synced it! Yay
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
19:05
Can you repeat how to find pronto in a real course? Can’t find it 😬
Mariana Silva
19:26
Make sure you publish your course; on the blue navigation bar
Mariana Silva
19:30
scroll down
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
19:31
It is published
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
19:36
And I have a start date
Mariana Silva
20:07
what do you see under "help"?
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
20:24
Hold on
Jim Julius (he/him)
20:52
(Mariana’s referring to the global navigation menu at the far left in Canvas - there should be a Pronto icon at the bottom of it once you are in at least one published course where Pronto could be used.)
Diane Apegian
21:12
This is very helpful!
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
21:13
Aha! Found it. Thanks Jim/Mariana. That’s the part I missed. Found it now.
Mariana Silva
21:21
yay🙂
Shelli Homer
21:29
my pronto disappeared once and I had to go to the webpage to get it back.y
Crystal Carothers
23:14
I found pronto, but my spring class is not there, just the NCESL Dept. and my courses from last semester.
Mariana Silva
23:46
Crystal, did you publish your course?
Jim Julius (he/him)
23:50
Your spring class won’t show up there, Crystal, until you’ve published it.
Lauren Luker

Crystal Carothers
24:59
Yes, it’s published but don’t see the course in pronto
Lauren Luker

Jim Julius (he/him)
26:52
@Crystal there is a lag between publishing and having it show up in Pronto, so if you just did that in the last few hours, you won’t see it show up until sometime in the next 24 hours or so - this is what Lauren’s talking about right now :-)
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
29:46
Question: is there a short how-to video for students? Or do you just demo in class like you are doing now?
Mariana Silva
30:17
Kristi Reyes created a great doc with screenshots that I can share with you
Lauren Luker
30:24
I also want to call out that to set up notification preferences as well as language preferences, you will go to the settings cog in your pronto drawer on the left hand side of the screen.
Lauren Luker
30:51
Ingrid - I will also share with Jim our Pronto general overview video. Many teachers I work with will share that with studetns
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
31:08
Thanks Mariana and Lauren.
Julia Cantu
32:23
Mariana I would like a copy as well or post in Canvas course?
Jim Julius (he/him)
32:44
@Mariana, it would be great to have Kristi’s doc for posting on our TIC Pronto page if she’s willing ...
Mariana Silva
32:46
Yes, I can email it to our department
Mariana Silva
32:54
sure. I will ask Kristi
Jim Julius (he/him)
33:04
👍🏼
Mariana Silva
33:36
Jim, I will get back to you soon
Lauren Luker
34:39
Thanks so much Serena!
Jim Julius (he/him)
35:33
Thank you, Serena :-)
Jim Julius (he/him)
39:57
@Lauren, Pronto custom-created groups last forever, right? So if there are some real connections created via a class using Pronto, someone could create a group to allow that to continue, correct?
Lauren Luker
40:29
Correct, they would be able to have those connections continue from those groups!
Lauren Luker
40:52
If there were ever a need to disable groups though, you can also request that through us 🙂
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
40:58
Wow that’s good news. So they don’t have to be a student with access to CANVAS?
Jim Julius (he/him)
41:50
Leslie, yes, to use Pronto on a mobile device, you must use the Pronto app.
Lauren Luker
42:08
Ingrid - In order to create their initial user in Pronto they would have to be a student, but after that, it will last as long as they can use their student email to log in!
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
42:11
Oh, ok, so it’s independent from cANVAS
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
42:23
That’s really cool. Thanks Lauren.
Lauren Luker
42:34
Ingrid - Yes you can use it either integrated through canvas or independent from canvas!
Lauren Luker
42:43
Thanks Mariana! Wonderful presentation!
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
42:55
Very very helpful, Mariana
Serena Mercado
43:11
And the app is amazing… just like using your regular text messenger. I think that’s why the students prefer Pronto over everything else
Serena Mercado
44:40
That’s cool
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
44:43
So, I have a Google number as well. Should I remove it from my syllabus or use it as a backup?
Serena Mercado
45:04
I wouldn’t even use it anymore 🤷🏽‍♀️
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
45:22
Lol! Ok!
Serena Mercado
45:25
It’s nice having everything in one place
Mariana Silva
45:31
It's up to you, Ingrid. A colleague shared that a student's behavior was making her uncomfortable, so stopped using Google Voice
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
46:12
Got it.
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
46:27
👍🏼😊
Lauren Luker
46:32
Also with Pronto, you can request transcripts from us at any time if there were a need to address something like that. You will have a complete record available to you even if someone were to delete a message, we can still pull it if ever necessary!
Lauren Luker
46:44
We don’t have that happen often at all, but nice to know as a safety net
Jim Julius (he/him)
47:49
^ The point Lauren makes here is a really important consideration when faculty ask about sanctioning or participating in student-created Discords.
Lauren Luker
48:19
Great, thank you Arlie! Fantastic experiences.
Jim Julius (he/him)
51:34
Interesting! Never noticed that.
Dawn Bell
52:47
It also doesn’t show up in student view, so I need to go out of student view when I want to show them where it’s located. 🙂
Lauren Luker
53:11
Dawn, yes! You’ll need to be out of student view for yourself in order to show where it is.
Mariana Silva
53:12
I didn't notice that
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
53:59
So, how do the students find it?
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
54:20
If it doesn’t show up for students
Jim Julius (he/him)
54:25
The students do see it. It just doesn’t work for instructors using Student View
Lauren Luker
54:35
Correct, thanks Jim
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
54:35
Ohhh, ok! Thanks, Jim.
Mariana Silva
54:45
They can find it on the blue navigation bar. Only when you switch to student view, you cannot see it
Mariana Silva
55:00
Students like to use the app a lot; so do I:)
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
56:22
So there are two ways to use it: from CANVAS and from the app on their phone.
Lauren Luker
56:28
Thanks for sharing Marsha!
Mariana Silva
56:32
Yes!
Lauren Luker
56:33
Marlesha*
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
56:36
(Sorry, I have lots of questions lol )
Serena Mercado
56:39
I use the app 95% of the time, either from my phone or iPad
Mariana Silva
56:51
Bring them on, Ingrid:)
Arlie Langager (she, hers)
57:13
My students and I almost exclusively use the phone app.
Mariana Silva
57:28
same here
Dawn Bell
58:42
I like the immediacy and the ability to be available to students through the app. 😀
Lauren Luker

Mariana Silva
59:03
yes, Dawn🙂
Ingrid Sbacchi Bairstow
59:45
So cool. Great, thanks Jim and Lauren.
Serena Mercado
01:03:11
Students I have spoken with have told me that once they see how active our Pronto is they see no need to use Discord
Dawn Bell
01:03:33
Thank you! I love Pronto! 🙂
