Do the videos in studio count against our course file size quota?

No, they do not. They are separate.

Ah good. MiraCosta is generous, but other colleges have much smaller quotas which I’m struggling with! 🙂

Studio is it's own media server that is integrated in Canvas.

If you choose to import a video from another streaming service, will you need to recaption it? Is there a way to automate the process?

When you are moving from another streaming server, you will first need to download the video file. You will also have to download the caption file. Then you can upload the video file, and then the caption file to Studio

So no need to re-do the captions. Although it will not be automatic. However it is worth it to move to CAnvas Studio as we do not have commercials like YouTube does.

Since videos from other sites can be relatively easily embedded into Canvas pages, assignments, etc, what is the advantage of uploading one of those videos into Studio?

Since videos are on our own server you won't have to worry that service will go away. I've had instructors have their YouTube accounts cancelled and all the videos were gone - yikes.

Does the recording service on Studio also provide an auto caption service or is that done after recording the video?

I had been using 3C to re-caption some YouTube videos that did not have captions. Would you recommend using Studio instead?

Studio has auto captions similar to YouTube. It will auto caption for you. Then you just edit the captions to make them perfect.

Yes, I'd recommend Studio. WIth 3C if you have the caption file, be sure to download that in addition to the video file when you move the content over.

Can you duplicate a video and then play with the tools and keep the original intact in case you irreparably damage the original video?

Yes, you sure can Kris. It's a good idea to make a copy.

Can you undo the edits?

Yes, they sure do. Works great with the copy as the videos are on the single streaming server to they references to them copy

If you make a video that you want to use in other courses, if it doesn’t reference a section, you could just change the thumbnail right?

You could, or if the video is more generic titled you can just select the video from Studio in your other class.

For those of us who teach at several different colleges - I assume Studio files are local to MiraCosta only, and we’d have to recreate/import them at each of our other college Canvas sites?

If you want the advanced features of Studio yes you will need to download and upload to their Canvas Server. However if you don't want those advanced features(like quizzes) you can get the public URL and post that in your other school's LMS.

Ah ok, thanks - I would mostly use plain videos anyway, at least right now.

The option in Canvas Studio is : Share Media, then select link, then click Create Public Link.

A public link can be put in another college LMS, or on a website for example.

Curious if you insert a video with no audio. Can you overlay audio to narrate the video in Studio?

If I record the video on Zoom can I import into Canvas so I can use the editing software there?
