Hello everyone! (Hi Erika 😊)

Is the funding generally provided as a set stipend amount per course? Just curious :)

Good question, we don't have all the details yet about the new funding... Jim can probably answer this question with the current funds...
Janelle West

Thanks -- that gives me the basic idea!

Worth mentioning that the innovative approach to an open Spanish text that Pilar has pioneered is being shared and recognized beyond MiraCosta too ...

What advantages or disadvantages have you found to using OER or other no-cost materials in your classes?
Doug Brownell "Mr. B" (MCC)
58:40
I've used WebAssign for ~20yrs. I worried (a lot!) about switching to OER because of the huge time investment creating HW questions for *all* of my varied courses. But... OpenStax has worked with WebAssign and has comprehensive HW packs now, and the cost for my students is about $30. *Much* better than the ~$200 that my students at another school are forced to pony up.

That's great Doug!

How has providing a zero textbook cost course changed the way you teach and the way students learn? How did the culture of your department facilitate a ZTC course/program? And, how has going through a transition to ZTC course/program changed your department?
Doug Brownell "Mr. B" (MCC)
01:09:38
I've been teaching since 1994, but in that entire time I've never taught my physics courses straight from the text. I use our book as a reference, and encourage my students to pre-read each chapter to learn the vocabulary. It means I have to provide more comprehensive examples in my lectures, but that's the *fun* part for me 😁
Lauren McFall
01:10:16
yeah! teaching is supposed to be fun... maybe it's hard, but still fun :)
Jeanine Sepulveda
01:13:48
When I switched to no-textbook, I created my own content that was relevant to our local communities and businesses that students may feel more of a connection to. We also look globally, depending upon the interests and/or cultural identities of students in the class. I was also able to record the content so that students can listen rather than only relying on reading information - in a way that's different from a lecture.
Pilar Hernández (ella)
01:14:17
Yes! Same, Jeanine.

01:14:50
Departmental culture is so critical to having this work really take hold. Love hearing these stories about departments supporting and sharing with one another.

Thank you, Jeanine!

01:18:19
For folks here who aren't sure their departments are "ready" for this, one suggestion on a place to start is to establish a departmental Canvas shell where department faculty can share course resources and examples with each other ...
Jim. Julius (he/him)
01:24:14
Side note - there are two textbook authoring platforms/tools that are most commonly used by open textbook authors if they are creating something interactive outside of a course management system like Canvas: - PressBooks (Billy is mentioning) and LibreTexts.

Hola Pilar, immensely grateful for making Professor Petri's "vision" that we did not need a textbook for teaching Spanish a reality with your hard work during your sabbatical year, producing the online editions of "Pluma" for Spanish 101, 102 and 201 with stories of real life people. Also, introducing the grammar to the students in a very gentle way.
